Post gay people like me
on: February 12, 2012, 15:32

Hi my name is Douglas from iner city Melbourne Australia. I am an openly gay man, artist, designer and educator. I was diagnosed with YOP late last year. Im new to all this but I am trying to contact any other GLBT people living with this condition. I find at times telling people about my condition and challenges this creates, is like a "second coming out", sometimes exhausting, emotional, but ultimately liberating at the same time. It can be stressful enough being GLBT without having a physically challenging condition. While the general parkinsons community has been fantastic and supportive, I am feeling a bit like "the only gay in the village" :D

Dear Douglas,
Please come to our next meeting and meet other members.
We all have Parkinson's or are partners of PLWP; that is what bonds us, and we don't discriminate to any members. In fact we have other gay couples who contribute greatly to our group, and we love them all. You are not alone. Please email me your details, and i'll email you the details of our next meeting, and put you on our email list. YOU ARE VERY WELCOME. youngatpark@hotmail.com

Hi Douglas. I can assure you that your not the only gay in the village with Pd. it doesnt discrimate unfortunately. I'm 50 and was diagnosed at 47. Was a hard road at first but doing ok at the moment. Working way too hard fitting in gym and swimming. And still manage to have a social life. I live in Prahran with my partner of 11 years who is a great support and my rock. Keeps me real as well. I'd be happy to meet got a coffee or meet at the next yap group. My private email is davidwillis7@optusnet.com.au. Contact me there and I can give you my mobile. Would be really interested in your story. Regards David. Ps. Pd keeps me up way too late. 1.17 am. And I have to be up for work at 6.

G'day Douglas,
I'm straight and was dxd with yoPd 7 years ago.
I find it appalling that you should be discriminated against for being gay, I'm speechless that you would experience discrimination for telling people you have Pd.
I was counselled when I was dxd to tell people that I had any dealings with that I have Pd, and so far I haven't had a nasty reaction.
Some people are uncomfortable and not sure how to respond but I find that pointing out that its not contagious helps - society is very undereducated about Pd.
I wish you well.
