Strategy-Based Training and Exercise

Parkinson’s causes a breakdown of the messages that control a person’s automatic movements. In many cases, a person can be shown special tips and strategies to help facilitate movement. This is achieved by redirecting blocked messages in the Basal Ganglia to the Frontal Cortex, which is responsible for a person’s concentration and attention.

The best way to learn these strategies is to make an appointment with a physiotherapist, occupational therapist or speech therapist. All three health specialisations offer practical advice on making day-to-day tasks easier through strategy training.

Exercise is easily one of the best ways to help take control of your health and wellbeing. Anyone can be involved – whether it be an intense cardio session that improves fitness, through to gentle stretches completed at home which help to ease muscle rigidity.

The benefits of exercise are well-documented. In Parkinson’s they can include:

  • Ease muscle rigidity
  • Improve balance and coordination
  • Assist concentration
  • Improve mood
  • Lower stress

If you are unsure about which exercises you should be doing to optimise your benefit in Parkinson’s, make an appointment with a physiotherapist who can provide some specific advice relevant to you.
